How to spot a roofing scammer?

Honest roofers don't knock on your door 24-72 hours after a hurricane. They have an SC LLR license you can verify at llr.sc.gov before you sign anything. A real inspector won't show you photos of damage you can't see from the ground yourself. You shouldn't be writing a deposit or handing over your insurance check before any work starts. And nobody should pressure you to sign an Assignment of Benefits (AOB) the same day. The AOB hands them control of your entire insurance claim, including the right to negotiate with your carrier.
