How much wind does it take to damage a roof?

Less than most homeowners expect. Architectural shingles carry a wind rating of 110 mph or more, but that rating only holds while every shingle is fully sealed and nailed to spec. A roof that has lost its seal can shed shingles in gusts of 45 to 60 mph. On the Grand Strand we see blow-offs from ordinary summer thunderstorms and winter nor'easters, not only from named storms.

How do I know if my roof has wind damage?

Look for missing or blown-off shingles, horizontal creases across shingles that settled back down, missing ridge caps, lifted drip edge, and torn soffit or fascia. Most wind damage is not visible from the ground, which is why we inspect the eaves, rakes, and ridge directly rather than judging from the driveway.

Can wind damage cause leaks even if no shingles are missing?

Yes, and this is the most commonly missed kind of wind damage. Wind breaks the adhesive seal strip under a shingle and creases the mat without tearing the shingle off. The shingle lies flat again and looks intact, but it no longer seals, so wind-driven rain works underneath it and reaches the decking.

Will insurance cover wind damage roof repair?

Most South Carolina homeowner policies cover sudden wind damage minus your deductible. Coastal policies often carry a separate windstorm or hurricane deductible, so check which one applies before you file.
