As a local, family-owned Myrtle Beach roofing company, we care deeply about the people who make this community what it is, and Cheyenne is the heart of that community. She told us her roof had been leaking ever since Hurricane Matthew, about ten years ago.

Working two jobs and having lost her mother 12 years ago, she had been keeping her house dry entirely on her own using buckets and endless cans of Flex Seal.

Eventually, the wear and tear caught up, and her insurer stated the roof had to be replaced. Because she simply couldn't afford an $11,000 bill out of pocket, she lost her homeowners insurance, carrying the full risk of every storm alone.

A Woman Who Kept Her House Together Alone

With her mother and only parent passing away 12 years ago, she has maintained her home in Loris entirely by herself. This has been a struggle itself, as she has had to work two jobs, not just at the Backstreet Cafe.

Content creator Cole Simpson and two friends happened to sit in her section. Struck by her warmth and moved by her story, they decided to step in and help. Over three days, Cole's team orchestrated three life-changing surprises: a brand-new GE washer and dryer to end a decade of trips to the laundromat, a full yard restoration, and a brand-new roof.

The Call From Cole

While the new washer and dryer went in, Cole climbed up to check the roof. He found missing shingles, broken shingles, a soft spot in the decking and a ridge line that was failing. That is when he called us.

Ten Years of Buckets and Flex Seal

Up close, the damage was worse than it looked from the yard: there were holes we could see from the attic, the bathroom ceiling had buckled (most likely from failed pipe flashing), water stains ran through most of the rooms, the popcorn ceiling was falling off, and one active leak dripped right next to a light fixture!

For ten years, Cheyenne fought this battle alone, climbing into the attic with up to three cans of Flex Seal for every new leak and strategically placing buckets underneath. Her determination kept most of the drywall intact, but it was a heavy burden to carry.

One Day to a New Roof

Our crew replaced the whole roof in one day! They swapped out the damaged wood and spliced in new 2x4s to reinforce the framing before the new IKO Dynasty shingles in Granite Black went on. The install was on July 7, 2026.

At the reveal, Cheyenne was so happy, and said she had never seen her roof look anything but patchy, and never one solid color.

Why Did the New Roof Matter for Cheyenne's Insurance?

The new roof lets Cheyenne buy homeowners insurance again. Her insurer had required a roof replacement she could not afford, so she lost her coverage and carried the full risk of any storm, fire or accident herself.

Insurers can refuse to renew a policy over roof age or condition. Our guide to homeowners insurance with an old roof explains your options when that notice arrives. Linta Roofing inspects storm damage to the same engineering standard insurers use to decide whether a claim is covered.

Are There Free Roof Replacement Programs in South Carolina?

Free roof replacement programs in South Carolina cover part of the cost, not all of it. SC Safe Home grants generally range from $4,000 to $7,500 for eligible coastal homeowners, according to the SC Department of Insurance.

SC Safe Home funds stronger roofs on owner-occupied, single-family homes. There is no income limit to apply; household income sets the grant amount. The 2026 rounds opened on February 10 and April 8, and funds ran out within days. Homeowners aged 62 or older in eligible rural areas can also apply for a USDA Section 504 home repair grant of up to $10,000, according to USDA Rural Development. Linta Roofing is a certified installer for South Carolina roof grant programs, which can take up to $7,500 off a qualifying job. Our guide to SC Safe Home and Fortified roof grants walks through the application.

What Can You Do If You Cannot Afford a New Roof?

Homeowners who cannot afford a new roof have 5 main options, including an inspection, an insurance claim, a grant, financing and a temporary leak fix:

  1. Book a roof inspection. Replacement inspections are free and repair inspections cost $125. Some roofs need a repair instead of a replacement, and our roof inspection services show which one you need.
  2. File an insurance claim, if a storm caused the damage and your policy is active. An approved claim pays for the covered damage minus your deductible.
  3. Apply for a grant. Our list of government grants and assistance programs for roof replacement covers the programs open in 2026.
  4. Finance the roof. Linta Roofing offers third-party roof financing that does not run a hard credit inquiry.
  5. Protect the inside while you wait. Learn how to temporarily fix a roof leak so water stays away from drywall and wiring.
