How Much Damage Can Animals Do to My Roof?
7:46

Is your roof showing signs of wear and tear? Do you hear strange noises from your attic?

It’s possible that outdoor critters are causing the problem. Whether in your attic space or on top of your roof, wild animals can do a world of damage to your home.

So, what kind of damage are they capable of? And how can you fix the issue?

Here, you’ll learn why animals might find elements of your roof to be a tasty snack. You’ll also learn how they do it and how to spot the signs early, before significant damage is done to your home.

Let’s talk about it.

Common Animals that Can Damage Your Roof

Regardless of whether you find outdoor animals adorable or pesky, they’re animals driven by a survival instinct. And if something on your roof or in your attic will help them protect themselves, they’re likely to gravitate toward it.

So who are the leading culprits? And what kind of damage can they cause to your roof?

Roof Damage Caused by Squirrels

If you live in a tree-lined neighborhood, you’ve likely seen squirrels chomping on acorns, climbing trees, and even unintentionally hyping up your dog. While squirrels are generally considered harmless animals, they can do a great deal of damage to your roof.

Squirrels are known to:

  • Chew through shingles, fascia boards, and attic vents
  • Sharpen their teeth on metal pipe boots and skylights
  • Chew electrical wires, posing a fire hazard

Roof Damage Caused by Raccoons

A few years ago we were called to do a roof inspection on a beach home in the Myrtle Beach area. When we arrived, we saw yellow stains all over their ceiling. Upon further inspection, it was clear that this homeowner had squatters—a family of raccoons had entered through a loose gable end. In the attic, we found extensive waste and damage far beyond a roof replacement.

  • Tear off shingles, fascia, and vulnerable areas
  • Defecate on your roof

Roof Damage Caused by Birds

While birds are less intentionally destructive, they can pose significant challenges. Birds are always looking for a safe place to nest, often gutters and roof vents.

  • Block gutters, causing water intrusion under shingles
  • Block roof vents, preventing ventilation

Roof Damage Caused by Rodents (Rats/Mice)

Rodents may be small, but their sharp teeth make them dangerous. They chew wood and electrical wires, creating fire hazards.

Roof Damage Caused by Bats

Bats, including Big Brown and Eastern Red species in Myrtle Beach, look for dark attic spaces. Their guano (excrement) is corrosive and can deteriorate materials quickly.

Roof Damage Caused by Insects

Termites, carpenter ants, and wasps slowly weaken roof structures. Inspections are critical to catch the damage early.

Types of Roof Damage Caused by Animals

  • Structural Damage: Shingles torn, decking clawed/chewed
  • Ventilation and Insulation Issues: Damaged vents, ruined insulation
  • Water Intrusion: Entry holes, blocked gutters
  • Health & Safety Hazards: Waste, mold, bacteria, fire risk from wires

Signs You May Have an Animal Problem

  • Scratching or scurrying noises in the attic
  • Droppings or urine smells inside
  • Visible roof or fascia damage
  • Nesting material near vents/gutters
  • Unexplained water stains indoors
